Step 1: review of your medical file, before any travel

No trip is organised before this step. You send your medical reports, recent antibiograms and imaging results; your coordinator translates them and forwards them to the Eliava Institute doctors, who give an opinion on whether treatment is feasible in your situation within 5 working days.

One point matters more than anything at this stage: the bacterium responsible must have been identified, or at least be identifiable from a sample. Without an identified bacterium, there is no phagogram, and therefore no targeted treatment.

Step 2: arrival in Tbilisi and the first clinical consultation

Your care begins on the very first day at the clinic. It has three parts.

Unable to travel?

Step 6: returning home and consolidation

What this protocol cannot do

Phage therapy treats bacterial infections only. It has no effect on viral or fungal infections, and it is neither a cancer treatment nor a treatment for autoimmune diseases.

It also requires a bacterium that can be identified from a sample: without a strain to test, a phagogram is impossible. More rarely, no active phage is found against a given strain, or adaptation does not succeed — the prior medical opinion exists to anticipate this.
