Where to Get Treated with Phage Therapy?

PHAGE THERAPY IN GEORGIA

If you're looking where to undergo phage therapy, Georgia will be the first destination that comes to mind! Indeed, Georgia has been practicing phage therapy since 1923, accumulating 100 years of experience. French researcher Félix d'Hérelle, who discovered phage therapy, went to Tbilisi in Georgia in 1920. He established the world institute of phage therapy there. Europe and North America stopped using phage therapy with the onset of World War II and the advent of antibiotics.

However, Georgia never stopped practicing it. Even when the West banned phage therapy around 1980, Georgia continued its practice. Today, Georgia stands as the country with the most extensive experience in the field. Its doctors have the best training. The Georgian phage bank is one of the largest in the world: according to the Eliava Institute, it holds more than 1,000 active phages and more than 12,000 reference bacterial strains.

In Georgia, you'll find a phage therapy specialist for each type of pathology. Urologists, pulmonologists, surgeons, ENT specialists, dentists, dermatologists, pediatricians, gastroenterologists, and others who can treat you with phages. However, you need to visit the right place according to your pathology: a clinic for osteitis, a specialized dentist for dental infections and gingivitis, and the Eliava Institute for other types of infections (Pulmonary, urinary, dermatological, etc.).

PHAGE THERAPY IN FRANCE

Phage therapy was authorized in France until around 1980, then disappeared from medical practice and from pharmacy shelves. It is coming back today, driven by rising antibiotic resistance, but access remains very limited.

In Lyon, the PHAGEinLYON programme issued 786 opinions between 2017 and 2025 and treated 135 patients, mostly for severe bone and joint infections. The only official compassionate-access framework of the ANSM (the French medicines agency) covers severe bone and joint infections caused by Staphylococcus aureus: urinary tract infections are not included.

Dr Alain Dublanchet, a pioneer of phage therapy in France, has written a reference book on the subject: "Phage Therapy: Using Viruses to Fight Infections".

PHAGE THERAPY IN POLAND

A long-established phage therapy research center exists in Poland. It conducts numerous research studies and regularly publishes its results. However, it seems they only treat a very few patients on an experimental or compassionate basis. Indeed, Poland is part of Europe. According to European drug standards, phage therapy cannot yet be approved as a therapeutic means. This is because phages do not fit into the administrative categories that would allow them to be considered as medicines. Therefore, as of now, Poland is not among the destinations where one can undergo phage therapy.

PHAGE THERAPY IN BELGIUM

The Queen Astrid Military Hospital in Brussels coordinates magistral phage preparations, the most flexible framework in Europe. Between 2008 and April 2022, it received 1,066 requests and treated 100 patients – fewer than 1 in 10. Available phages remain limited to a small number of bacteria.
